On-Site or Remote Food Safety Support: Which Is Right for Your Business?
I’m often asked whether I provide food safety consultancy support on-site or remotely.
The answer is both.
The right approach depends on the business, the challenge and what we’re trying to achieve.
Technology has transformed how effectively we can work together. Teams meetings, document sharing and real-time communication mean that many aspects of technical support can now be delivered remotely, efficiently and cost-effectively.
But some things are better understood by being there.
When Remote Support Works Well
Remote support can be particularly effective when we are:
- Reviewing HACCP plans, procedures or technical documentation.
- Working through actions and improvements.
- Providing coaching or technical guidance.
- Holding regular project meetings.
- Responding to questions as they arise.
It keeps momentum moving without requiring unnecessary travel or accommodation costs.
When Being On-Site Matters
There are situations where there is real value in walking through the door.
If we’re developing food safety culture, understanding how a team works together, preparing for a significant retailer audit, assessing a production environment or coaching leaders, being physically present can reveal things that simply aren’t visible on a screen.
Sometimes one focused site visit is all that’s needed.
Other projects benefit from a regular on-site presence.
The Right Support Is the Support That Delivers the Desired Outcome
Neither approach is inherently better.
They’re simply different.
The best support isn’t defined by where it’s delivered.
It’s about understanding the business, listening to what people need and agreeing the most effective approach to deliver the greatest value.
Often, the answer is a combination of both.
That flexibility allows businesses to access support when they need it while using on-site time where it adds the greatest value.

Every Business Is Different
That’s one of the things I still enjoy most about this work.
Sometimes it’s walking the factory floor.
Sometimes it’s working together over a Teams call.
Sometimes it’s sitting around a table, face to face, finding the right solution together.
What matters most is achieving the right outcome — building stronger food safety cultures, confident leaders and capable teams.
